Parking on the south side of University Village has become a bit tight but the end result will be even more parking. Temporary construction fencing has gone up while trees and shrubs have come down next to the 45th Street Viaduct. The shopping center hopes to have a new 700 space parking garage put up by late 2012.

Exactly what U Village needs, more parking spaces for Mercedes and Lexus’. Yet another reason t avoid U Village: more cars and more congestion. What they really need are more stores that are affordable for people outside of Laurelhurst, not kicking out bookstores that everyone visits (no matter how despicable Barnes and Noble is).

Um, they didn’t ‘kick’ B&N out, the retailer can’t keep up with the times, you can thank Amazon and other, smart online retailers for that one.

Um, no – B&N would gladly have stayed, the U Village ownership decided to jack up the rents. That store is hopping busy most of the day. It’s a dumb move though – eventually, as don suggests, they’re going to slim their market down to people with six-figure disposable income, and it’s going to bite them.

I remember hearing of other retailers being sqeezed out of their locations by rent increases. Molbak’s and one of the banks, I think. Maybe a deli or food store? And at least one restaurant? I’m still mad that the two-story stationery story is no longer there. I spent major cash on their pens and other art supplies.

Does anyone know the details of the UW E-2 parking lot that is being leased/rented/loaned to the contractors for the new garage? They have put in trailers for the construction offices. The lot is almost below the 45th viaduct, where the fleet vehicles park.

B&N may have been “hopping” with browsing and loitering. But the registers were silent. Its just a sign of the impending implosion of the big box model. Best Buy, B & N, Bed bat beyond, etc. will all be gone in the next few years.
