In order to get in the holiday spirit, take the first step toward achieving saint status: Donate some boxers.

Roots Young Adult Shelter on Northeast 43rd Street reports that it is in need of men’s underwear. Boxers or briefs are donated to those who take showers at the shelter; socks, T-shirts, razors and other hygiene products are also provided.  The poor economy and cold weather have upped demand for the shelter’s free accommodations.

Roots also provides free meals, medical attention with a volunteer nurse and overnight housing to those between ages 18 and 25. The homeless youth are often camped out in front of Roots’ doors before they open at 9 p.m., hoping to beat the crowd for a place to sleep.

Roots’ staff is a group of regular volunteers, often affiliated with the Temple United Methodist Church directly above the shelter.
