Demolition day nears for Brooklyn Building

Construction around the UW campus continues in force this summer.  The old Brooklyn Building at the corner of Brooklyn Ave and NE 41st St is about to bite the dust.  We’ve learned the building that used to house UW offices and some 70 employees will be demolished in mid August.  Campus officials say the structure, which was built in the 1920’s, had simply worn out. 

Eventually, the site will become a new residence hall housing more than 400 students (pictured below).  A huge 90-foot elm tree at the location will be spared.  In fact, it will be the centerpiece of something called Elm Plaza.  The Brooklyn Building site is part of a major student housing project by the UW.

    I hope whoever drew the mock up at Mahlum Architects realizes that tree is WAY bigger than portrayed in their drawing…
